Medica CEO John Naylor

John Naylor

President and CEO, Medica

John Naylor is President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Medica. He also is a member of the board of directors of Medica Holding Company (MHC), which oversees Medica's family of businesses, including Medica Health Plans, Medica Community Health Plan, Medica Insurance Company, Medica Self-Insured, MMSI, Inc. d/b/a Medica Health Solutions, Medica Health Management, LLC, and The Medica Foundation. He joined the company in 2010 and became President and Chief Executive Officer in 2017.

Mr. Naylor has more than 30 years of industry experience. Mr. Naylor previously was Senior Vice President, Commercial Markets, Medica's largest business unit. Under his leadership, Commercial Markets achieved record highs in membership growth and developed a number of industry-first innovations, including accountable care organization products in partnership with a number of health care systems across Medica's service area.

Prior to joining Medica, Mr. Naylor spent 21 years at Willis Towers Watson (formerly Towers Perrin). For more than a decade, he served as the market leader for the Towers Perrin Minneapolis office and Managing Director for the U.S. Central Region, with responsibility for all aspects of selling and providing service to clients across the company's human resources consulting practice.

Mr. Naylor serves on the board of Greater MSP and is a member of the Itasca Project. Both organizations are committed to strengthening the regional economy through programs that promote economic development and regional vitality. He also serves as Board Chair of the Minnesota Council of Health Plans.

Mr. Naylor is a passionate volunteer at several community organizations, including the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities, where he serves on the board.

Medica Leadership

Lynn Altmann

Senior Vice President, Human Resources

Lynn Altmann is responsible for human resources, learning and facilities management, including building security, hospitality and office services. She reports to the CEO and is the executive representative to the Personnel & Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors. She came to Medica in 2000. Lynn has served in various leadership roles throughout Medica and has been a part of the officer team for more than 11 years. Previously at Medica, she was the Vice President of Talent Management, and held leadership roles in Medica's Contact Centers and Operations. She also was the VP, Executive Lead for Health Care Reform with responsibility for ensuring organizational readiness for the rollout of the ACA.

Before joining Medica, Lynn held positions at Optum, Lutheran Social Services and North Central College and Kishwaukee Community College. Lynn has a Master's Degree in Developmental Psychology and a Master's Degree in Child and Family Studies from Northern Illinois University.

Mark Baird

Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Mark Baird is responsible for the overall financial management of Medica's business operations and investment activities. His accountabilities include finance, actuarial, healthcare economics, internal audit, and treasury. Mr. Baird joined the company in November 2000 and has served in a variety of financial executive roles at Medica. He has over 25 years of healthcare and insurance industry financial experience. Prior to joining Medica, Mr. Baird was Chief Financial Officer of IHC Health Plans (now SelectHealth) based in Utah. He is the executive representative to the Finance & Investment Committee and the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors. Mr. Baird holds a Masters in Business Administration from Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah.

Geoff Bartsh

Senior Vice President and General Manager, Individual and Family Business

Geoff Bartsh is responsible for all aspects of the Individual and Family Business segment, both financial and operational. This includes responsibility for profit and loss, sales, marketing, billing, enrollment, service and claims. Medica sells individual products on and off the exchange in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wisconsin. Previously at Medica, Mr. Bartsh was vice president and general manager for Minnesota State Health Care Programs at Medica. Before that, he was vice president of public policy, a role in which he worked on major legislative issues including the Affordable Care Act.

Paul Crowley

Senior Vice President and General Manager, Commercial Markets

Paul Crowley leads Medica's employer-based business segment with responsibility for customer retention & growth, product development, underwriting and partnerships with brokers and consultants. He serves on Medica's executive leadership team and collaborates across the organization to develop and deliver innovative and cost effective health plan solutions for Commercial customers and members.

Paul has over 20 years of experience in the health benefits industry. Prior to joining Medica, he held sales and consulting positions in the Chicago offices of Cigna and in the Boston offices of Willis Towers Watson (formerly Towers Perrin) and Aon Hewitt.

Paul received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame and earned a Master's degree in Healthcare Administration from Johns Hopkins University.

David H. Ellenbogen

Senior Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel

David H. Ellenbogen is Senior Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel with responsibility for compliance, privacy, regulatory affairs, public policy and other legal matters. Most recently, he was General Counsel and Secretary at Scott and White Health Plan in Texas.

Previously, Mr. Ellenbogen served in various legal capacities including Assistant Attorney General for the State of Texas, as an Associate at Wienner & Gould, PLC, and as a law clerk in the United States Tax Court in Washington, D.C., and the United States District Court in Detroit, Michigan.

Mr. Ellenbogen currently serves as member of the national Governing Council of the American Bar Association Health Law Section. He previously served as the Chair of the Fraud and Compliance Interest Group and as Vice-Chair of the Managed Care and Insurance Interest Group of American Bar Association Health Law Section.

Mr. Ellenbogen is a graduate of Washington University School of Law (St. Louis).

Robert Geyer

Chief Operations Officer

Robert Geyer is responsible for ensuring that Medica has the people, process and system infrastructure in place for operations and IT to support the organization's growth in both products and geography. He joined Medica in January 2019.

Mr. Geyer most recently served as chief executive of Reta Trust, a nonprofit health care trust that provides access to affordable, quality health care to employees of the Catholic Church located throughout the United States. Prior to joining Reta Trust, he was an interim executive leader at California Health and Wellness, a Centene health plan, where he provided operational leadership to the organization as they worked through the integration of the HealthNet acquisition. Previously, Mr. Geyer held executive leadership positions for 20 years at Blue Shield of California, where in his last seven years he was senior vice president, customer quality.

Mr. Geyer holds a Master's of Business Administration degree from Pepperdine University and Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of California at Davis. He serves as a mentor and guest lecturer at Pepperdine University and University North Carolina Wilmington. He also is a leadership development mentor with Show Mercy International in Uganda.

Kelly Lindberg

Senior Vice President, Chief Marketing and Experience Officer

Kelly Lindberg provides leadership and direction to ensure optimal customer experience across all touch-points. She is responsible for all marketing, branding and consumer experience activities, including digital strategy, brand strategy, advertising, marketing communications, public relations, and member and provider communications. Kelly has more than 20 years of experience defining strategy, driving change throughout organizations and delivering initiatives that resulted in enhanced consumer experience, operational efficiency and growth.

Before joining Medica, Kelly served as Vice President, Consumer Experience for Optum where she was responsible for leading the consumer-facing efforts for six key lines of business with more than 200 products. In support of this work, she built a new consumer-centric discipline and team to envision and create the desired experience across all consumer touch-points and product lines. She also served in a number of roles at Target, most recently as Senior Director, Experience Design.

Kelly holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Catherine.

Tom Lindquist

Senior Vice President and General Manager, Government Programs

Tom Lindquist is responsible for directing the strategic development, customer service and operations of all of Medica's state and federal government-related (Medicaid and Medicare) products. This includes accountability for profit and loss, product development, operations, member service and compliance for the business segments. Mr. Lindquist also is responsible for the organization's relationship with the Minnesota Department of Human Services and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Before joining Medica, Mr. Lindquist held executive positions with UnitedHealth Group and served as a health insurance industry liaison to the Congressional Budget Office and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

John R. Mach, Jr., M.D.

Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer

John R. Mach, Jr., M.D., provides clinical representation and consultation to Medica's providers, customers and other industry partners. In addition, he is responsible for overall clinical leadership supporting Medica's initiatives that partner with providers to enhance clinical value — improving care at a lower cost — for the communities Medica serves.

Dr. Mach has more than 31 years of medical and leadership experience across a broad range of roles. Most recently, he served as chief medical officer for Evolent Health, where he provided oversight, leadership and strategic direction in clinical quality and medical management for more than 30 provider partners serving Medicare, Medicaid and commercial populations. Before that, he served as the president of complex care management at Univita Health Inc. Throughout his career, he has served as chief medical officer at a number of organizations, including within UnitedHealth Group, where he also served as chief executive officer of its Evercare division.

Dr. Mach is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he completed his residency in internal medicine. He holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of St. Thomas.

Lori Nelson

Senior Vice President, Provider Strategy and Network Management

Lori Nelson directs all provider network management, provider relations and contracting activities. This includes the development of financially sound contracting arrangements (risk/value-based) that deliver value for members, providers and Medica. She also is charged with driving ongoing provider contracts and relationships that improve both the clinical and quality performance of the network while supporting market expansion into new geographies.

Lori has more than 23 years of health care experience that encompasses all aspects of provider contracting, finance and operations. Most recently, Nelson was chief operating officer at Buckeye Health Plan in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to that, she was vice president of provider relations at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota. And, before that, she worked on the provider side as director of managed care contracts at Fairview. Lori began her career in provider network-related operations at Medica as a manager, then director, of provider contracting.

Lori is a native Minnesotan and holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Minnesota, along with a Master of Science degree in Finance and Contracting from the University of St. Thomas.

Scott Reid

Vice President, Growth Initiatives

Scott Reid leads growth initiatives that support Medica's short and long-term planning, including identification of partnership opportunities, acquisition growth and transition strategies. Scott joined Medica in 1997 as a sales representative and has served in various leadership roles including vice president of middle market and small group sales, vice president of product strategy and development, and vice president of product and operations.

Scott has a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing from University of Minnesota Duluth and his MBA in Finance from the University of Minnesota.

Medica Board

John Buck

CEO, Whitefish Ventures

John Buck, the Chair of Medica's Board of Directors and the Medica Foundation Board of Directors, joined the Board in 2001 and serves on Medica's Audit, Community & Public Affairs, Finance, Governance, and Technology Committees. Mr. Buck is Chief Executive Officer of Whitefish Ventures, which provides financial services and general business expertise to other companies. Mr. Buck's previous business experience includes serving as President and Chief Operating Officer at Fingerhut Companies; Vice President of Administration at Alliant Techsystems; and Vice President of Administration at Honeywell, Inc. Mr. Buck previously served as Chairman of the Board of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, and currently serves on the board of Patterson Companies, Inc.

Mr. Buck supports several charities in the Minneapolis and Naples areas, including the United Way Foundation, the American Diabetes Association, and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He is a member of the Halo Innovations Board of Directors, which develops products to prevent SIDS. Mr. Buck is also a member of the Naples Education Foundation.

John Buck, the Chair of Medica's Board of Directors and the Medica Foundation Board of Directors, joined the Board in 2001 and serves on Medica's Audit, Community & Public Affairs, Finance, Governance, and Technology Committees. Mr. Buck is Chief Executive Officer of Whitefish Ventures, which provides financial services and general business expertise to other companies. Mr. Buck's previous business experience includes serving as President and Chief Operating Officer at Fingerhut Companies; Vice President of Administration at Alliant Techsystems; and Vice President of Administration at Honeywell, Inc. Rajesh Aggarwal, Ph.D.

Professor of Finance, D'Amore-McKim School of Business, Northeastern University

Dr. Rajesh Aggarwal joined the Medica Board in 2008 and serves as Chair of the Finance Committee and as a member of the Personnel & Compensation and Technology Committees. Dr. Aggarwal is currently a professor of finance at Northeastern University. He previously served as associate professor at the University of Minnesota, University of Virginia, University of Michigan and Dartmouth College. His areas of expertise include corporate governance, corporate finance and corporate valuation. He has an extensive background in the economics of organizations and has conducted research on bankruptcy, executive compensation, boards of directors, performance evaluation, and fraud.

A frequent author and presenter, Dr. Aggarwal has co-authored articles on such subjects as performance incentives, the diversification of firms and investment financing. In 2002, he received the MBA Elective Lecturer of the Year award from the Said Business School at Oxford University, and in 2006 and 2007 was named Most Outstanding Full-time MBA Elective Faculty Member by the Carlson School at the University of Minnesota.

Brigid Bonner

Senior Vice President, Chief Experience Officer, CaringBridge

Brigid Bonner joined the Medica Board in 2018 and serves as a member of the Audit, Medical, and Technology Committees. Ms. Bonner has more than 20 years of experience as a senior executive in many technology savvy, consumer-based businesses ranging from Fortune 100 companies to startups. Since 2015, Ms. Bonner has been Chief Experience Officer at CaringBridge, where she directs all aspects of product design, development, marketing and customer experience for the organization.

Prior to joining CaringBridge, Ms. Bonner served as Senior Vice President of Digital Marketing at Schwan's Home Service. Previously, she held the position of Senior Vice President of Strategy and Planning for OptumHealth. Before that, she served as Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at UnitedHealth Technologies, a shared services architecture and infrastructure organization that supports UnitedHealth Group's (UHG) enterprise operations. Prior to joining UHG, she served in various technology and digital leadership roles with Simon Delivers, Target Corporation and IBM.

Peter Kelly, M.D., MHA

Vice President and Executive Medical Director of Peri-operative Services, M Health Fairview

Dr. Peter Kelly joined the Medica Board in 2001 and serves as Chair of the Medical Committee and as a member of the Finance and Personnel & Compensation Committees. Dr. Kelly practices Bariatric Surgery as a member of the M Health Fairview Comprehensive Weight Management Program. He has served in multiple leadership positions throughout the years including Chief of Surgery for the HealthEast Surgery Department, President of the HealthEast Medical Staff and President of the Ramsey County Medical Society. He is also active in numerous professional associations. Dr. Kelly has a Masters in Health Administration (MHA) degree and currently serves in the role of VP/Executive Medical Director for Peri-operative Services in the M Health Fairview organization.

Dr. Kelly has been involved in numerous community activities, in addition to his service in medical organizations. He and his wife make annual trips to Guatemala to provide medical/surgical care to the indigent population there.

Samuel Leon, M.D.

Physician, Minnesota Gastroenterology, P.A.

Dr. Samuel Leon joined the Medica Board in 2001 and serves as Chair of the Community & Public Affairs Committee and as a member of the Audit and Medical Committees. Dr. Leon also serves on the Medica Foundation Board of Directors. Dr. Leon previously served as President of Minnesota Gastroenterology, and Vice Chief of Medicine at Methodist Hospital. He also has served as Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and has co-authored several articles in medical journals.

Dr. Leon currently serves on the Board of Minnesota Gastroenterology, P.A. and is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Fairview Physicians Association.

Gaye Adams Massey

Chief Executive Officer, YWCA St. Paul

Gaye Adams Massey joined the Medica Board in 2020 and serves on the Audit Committee. Ms. Massey is currently the Chief Executive Officer of YWCA St. Paul, which promotes racial justice and gender equity, provides supportive housing, job training and youth development programs, and operates a health & fitness center. Prior to YWCA St. Paul, Ms. Massey served as a senior deputy general counsel for UnitedHealth Group and as general counsel of its Ovations business. Before joining UHG, Ms. Massey served in legal leadership positions with QualChoice Health Plan of University Hospitals Health System and Aetna Inc., and practiced law with Crowell & Moring.

Ms. Massey is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and has served on many nonprofit boards including Children's Minnesota, Families Moving Forward, and Hartford Community Health Services. She currently serves on the board of Way to Grow and the Ramsey County Workforce Innovation Board.

Judge John M. Stanoch

Retired Hennepin County District Court Judge

Judge John Stanoch joined the Medica Board in 2014 and serves as Board Vice Chair and Chair of the Governance Committee. Judge Stanoch is also a member of the Community & Public Affairs, Medical and Personnel & Compensation Committees. He also serves on the Medica Foundation Board of Directors. Judge Stanoch previously served as President of Qwest Communications in Minnesota and North Dakota, as Minnesota's Chief Deputy Attorney General, and as a Hennepin County District Court Judge. After a career in business and the public sector, he also held executive leadership positions in the civic sector, serving as President and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Upper Midwest, Interim President of the Science Museum of Minnesota and Interim CEO of the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Judge Stanoch has been active in a wide range of community and professional organizations and currently serves on the boards of AchieveMpls, the strategic nonprofit partner of the Minneapolis Public Schools, the Board of Visitors of the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Letters and Science and the Minnesota Council of Churches Foundation. He has also served in the past as Chair of the Science Museum of Minnesota Board of Trustees, Chair of the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, President of the Minnesota District Judges Association, and on the board of the Minnesota Business Partnership.

Earl D. Stratton

Retired Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer,
TCF Financial Corporation

Earl Stratton joined the Medica Board in 2009 as a Consumer Director and serves as Chair of the Personnel & Compensation Committee and also as a member of the Finance, Governance, and Technology Committees. Prior to his retirement in 2015, Mr. Stratton served as Chief Information Officer for TCF Financial Corporation which is headquartered in Wayzata, Minnesota. Mr. Stratton had been with TCF since 1985 and prior to that worked at Huntington National Bank in Columbus, Ohio for 15 years.

Mr. Stratton supports several charities in the Minneapolis area including Matter, Memorial Blood Centers, Breast Cancer Research, and Suicide Prevention. He previously served on the Board of Directors of TCF National Bank headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota and C Financial Corporation, an Ohio Bank Holding Company headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.

Judge Esther Tomljanovich

Retired Associate Supreme Court Justice

Justice Esther Tomljanovich joined Medica's Board in 2001 and has served as a Consumer Director since June 2002. Justice Tomljanovich serves on the Community & Public Affairs, Governance, and Medical Committees. She also serves on the Medica Foundation Board of Directors. She previously served the State of Minnesota as a Supreme Court Justice from 1990 to 1998 and as a trial judge from 1977 to 1990. Before earning her law degree, Justice Tomljanovich spent seven years working for Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 2007, Academy of Trial Lawyers presented Justice Tomljanovich with its Distinguished Jurist Award.

Justice Tomljanovich has held leadership positions in numerous public, community and non-profit organizations, including serving on the Board of Trustees of the William Mitchell College of Law and chairing the Governor's Judicial Selection Committee. She was a founding member of Minnesota Women Lawyers.

Mary Twinem

Retired, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, Buffalo Wild Wings, Inc.

Mary Twinem joined the Medica Board in 2015 and serves as Chair of the Audit Committee and as a member of the Finance and Medical Committees. She also serves on the Medica Foundation Board of Directors. Prior to her retirement in 2016, Ms. Twinem served as Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of Buffalo Wild Wings, Inc., which was headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Previously, Ms. Twinem served as Controller of Buffalo Wild Wings, Inc. from January 1995 to July 1996, and as a director of the company from June 2002 to September 2003. Prior to that, she served as the Director of Finance/Controller of Dahlberg, Inc., the parent company of Miracle-Ear hearing aids, from 1989 to December 1994.

Ms. Twinem began her career in public accounting and holds an inactive CPA license. She serves on the public company boards of Valvoline, Inc. and IRET.
