More Than $1.2 Million in Grants Awarded by Medica Foundation to Health Organizations throughout the Upper Midwest

Funding Used for 2017 Programs that Serve about 168,000 People

March 22, 2017

MINNETONKA, Minn. — The Medica Foundation in 2016 made more than $1.2 million in grants to nonprofit organizations throughout Medica's service area, which includes Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and western Wisconsin.

"Health care is going through a period of change and we remain committed to the greater community during these challenging times, through support of our partners who improve health and remove barriers to health care services for those in need," said JoAnn Birkholz, director of the Medica Foundation. "Each year we identify the areas of greatest need and help fund programs that support key health care initiatives in the communities we serve."

Three of the largest grants focused on healthy aging and behavioral health:

  • The Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging received a $60,000 grant to expand its program Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health (REACH) throughout the state of Minnesota.
  • Volunteers of America received an $80,000 grant to provide culturally appropriate support, information and resources for the diverse aging population and those that care for them through individualized African American caregiver support services and community outreach.
  • The White Earth Land Recovery Project in Callaway, Minn., received a $40,000 grant to help high-risk members in the tribal community prevent and overcome trauma and addiction through a program of culturally relevant, mindfulness-based interventions and holistic strategies.

Funding priorities for the Medica Foundation include healthy aging, behavioral health, early childhood health and general health improvement. In regional and rural communities, the Medica Foundation also focused on nonprofit core mission support.

More information about grants in these areas is available on the Medica Foundation website.
