Medica ACOs Continue Strong Growth

October 27, 2016

MINNETONKA, Minn. — Medica's accountable care organizations (ACOs) continue to gain in popularity with employers of all sizes as more consumers choose these unique arrangements between the health plan and a growing number of health care systems.

In 2017, more than 40,000 consumers are expected to receive their care through one of seven ACOs offered through Medica, more than doubling ACO enrollment in just two years. ACOs are delivering improvements in health care, cost and satisfaction. Data demonstrate that members who receive care through an ACO have increased use of preventive services, fewer emergency room visits and fewer readmissions.

Medica introduced the first ACO in July 2012. Since then, the growing number of ACO partners are collaborating with Medica to make health care more affordable and to improve clinical outcomes and consumer experience. Based on enrollment trends, they have become one of the most successful products ever introduced by Medica. More than 65 percent of eligible members choose to receive their health care through one of Medica's ACO partners, and once enrolled, 94 percent of members reenroll the following year.

"Medica's ACOs are performing beyond our expectations in both the care delivered to our members as well as financially," said John Naylor, Medica senior vice president for commercial markets. "That performance speaks to the importance of the relationships developed between patients and providers. It also reinforces the value of partnerships between providers and health plans — working together with a common focus on the health of our members."

Four ACO options are available in the Twin Cities metro area: Fairview and North Memorial Vantage with Medica, Inspiration Health by HealthEast with Medica, Park Nicollet First with Medica and Ridgeview Community Network powered by Medica. Medica with Mayo Clinic Health System serves members in southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Altru & You with Medica serves members in northeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, and Essentia Choice Care with Medica is available to members in northern Minnesota, southeastern North Dakota and northern Wisconsin. More information about all of Medica's ACOs is available online.
