Medica Names Alan Spiro, M.D., M.B.A. as Chief Medical Officer

MINNETONKA, Minn. — Medica today announced that Alan Spiro, M.D., M.B.A., has joined the organization as Chief Medical Officer. His first day at Medica will be July 5, 2016

As Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Spiro will have overall responsibility for the work of Medica's Health Management segment. This includes working with Medica's provider partners to develop new models of collaboration aimed at improving quality, patient experience and value. It also includes working with Health Management staff and leaders from other Medica segments to build on the work currently underway to improve the quality and cost of health care.

"Dr. Spiro has had a distinguished career as an executive working in health-plan, health-care and health services businesses, as well as in clinical practice," said David Tilford, Medica President and Chief Executive Officer. "Dr. Spiro's strong commitment to member experience, his demonstrated ability to develop new and better solutions for improving quality while controlling cost, and his solid business experience make him the ideal person to lead our Health Management work at this point in our history."

He has provided leadership for well-established companies, such as Anthem Health. He has also built new businesses from the ground up. Most recently he founded Accolade Inc., which works with employers and health plans to transform the member experience and control medical costs.

Throughout his career he has been a change agent, dedicated to improving quality and satisfaction for health care consumers, while improving the efficiency of the health care system. As Principal and National Clinical Practice Leader at Towers Perrin, he worked with a number of Fortune 100 companies to develop their corporate health strategies and to implement some of the first health advocate and care management programs in the industry. He has been a visiting professor at several universities, including the Harvard School of Public Health, and a frequent speaker at health care national conferences.

Dr. Spiro holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and a Masters of Business Administration degree from the Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management.
